Beautifully shaped and balanced with super-smooth blend, this elegant male-voice ensemble lives up to the title of a programme that runs through the whole of Gloriana’s reign in secular works, both celebrated and rare, by Byrd, Gibbons, Morley, Tallis, Tomkins, and Weelkes, including the extraordinary Thule, the period of cosmography. Their singing is bright and nimble and, though their sound is rather churchy at times and cool acoustics make for muted passion, there is emotion enough in highlights such as the deeply felt Ye sacred muses, Byrd’s lament on the death of his mentor Tallis.
