Long-neglected in the concert hall and on record, Orr’s distinctive voice is heard here strong and true. His personal use of 12-tone technique was always compelling (the excellent notes describe it as ‘friendly’!) and his ear for sonority and response to text was second to none. As well as works for voice and piano, the recital includes a 20-minute cycle for voice and double bass and a vivid ‘Canzona’ for voice, clarinet and string trio. Spence is perfect for this repertoire: his communicative zeal and light, bright tenor matched by Burnside and his colleagues’ witty, dynamic playing. Listeners unfamiliar with Orr should start with this fine release from a most enterprising label.
