Worlds away from the heavy, ‘choral society’ tradition, this fine new recording dusts any remaining cobwebs from this much-recorded piece. The ensemble brings its characteristic deftness, Hengelbrock’s phrasing and colouring always insightful and apt. The solo parts are well cast, Michael Nagy’s Elijah commandingly powerful and tenor Lothar Odinius especially sweet-toned. An excellent addition to this work’s lengthy discography with a near-perfect recording.
