Hot on the heels of last year’s first release, Petrenko and his crack ensemble complete their Tchaikovsky cycle with aplomb. These are vivid, exciting readings: every bar is alive, each detail emerges with freshness yet never upsets Petrenko’s commanding grip of architecture. If tempi are often on the swift side, nothing feels rushed – the Pathétique is as beautiful as it is unsentimental. If the Polish symphony is split between discs, this is a small price to pay for playing (and recorded sound) of this quality.
