No one knows this work better than Haitink (the current catalogue lists four available versions), and no conductor has a more organic grasp of its elusive structure. Nothing is overdone, no detail is missed, each gesture effortlessly spun. It is broadly similar to his Chicago performance, released almost ten years ago: tempi now are even more flexible, phrasing even more naturally shaped. At BR’s low mid-price, it would be no extravagance to own both.
