Volume 13 in Priory’s Herculean Karg-Elert survey reaches into neglected nooks and crannies with three rarely recorded pieces. If Stefan Engels provides the brains in these considered readings, the brawn comes courtesy of the stocky, well-resourced V/85 Steinmeyer in Hamburg’s St Michael’s Church – notably so in the strikingly intricate and poetically intense Passacaglia & Fugue on B-A-C-H (op.150), while underlining the variety of the op.92 Three Pastels (stretching the imposing dynamic range of the third, its Vox angelica 8ftlending palpable mystery to the second) or adroitly inking in the cornucopia of references in the op.145 Music for Organ. Solid performances abetted by excellent booklet notes.
