Massimo Palombella has worked wonders with this iconic choir and, alleluia, they sing in tune almost consistently nowadays. Two of the nine thoughtfully selected motets are recorded premieres as is a new critical edition of Missa Papae Marcelli, captured in the Sistine Chapel with tempi dictated by its vast resonance. Phrase-ends tend to driftaway in fragrantly romantic diminuendi and speedier items narrowly escape becom- ing mush, but these colourful individual voices are harnessed in impressive team-work: subtlety, delicacy and elegance abound. It doesn’t get more authentic than this in terms of spiritual authority and Italophone vocalisation.
