The norman and romanesque vaults of Southwell Minster provide pleasingly crisp and bright acoustics for this centuries-spanning compendium of tributes to the Virgin Mary. The Minster’s Girls’ Choir and Lay Clerks stress beauty of sound in repertoire that stretches from the glowing There is No Rose and luminous plainchant hymn Now in Holy Celebration to Paul Drayton’s delightfully quirky Ecce ancilla Domini and the luxuriant warmth of Matthew Larkin’s Adam lay ybounden. In between, vocal works by Grieg, Howells, Patrick Hadley and others receive blended, well-proportioned performances punctuated by Naji Hakim organ solos, ably despatched by Edward Turner.
