To mark Christopher Herrick’s 75th birthday, Hyperion have released a compilation taking a track from each of the 14 CDs in his Organ Fireworks series. This whirlwind tour takes in some of the world’s most spectacular organs, from the town halls of Melbourne and Wellington to the Royal Albert Hall in London, and all are brilliantly captured. Some interpretations are quite individual and there is an inevitably liberal dose of tubas and en chamade reeds at every eventuality. However, amid the various tuba tunes you will find the interesting original version of Liszt’s Prelude & Fugue on BACH together with my favourite: Bonnet’s ‘Matin provençal’ from Poèmes d’automne with its delicious use of bells and birdsong.
