Was Daniel Bollius the first German to compose an ‘oratorio’ c.1620, just pipping Schütz to the post? The Johann Rosenmüller Ensemble conspires to persuade us in Johannes-Oratorium. Beautiful recording quality, six fine soloists doubling as chorus, and a colourful collection of instruments, elegantly played, enliven a work which leans heavily on the new Italian operatic style while tending towards the ethereal.
