Edie Hill has a gift for the numinous, and the members of The Crossing have a giftfor delivering such states in plain and unforced fashion. The textual materials here range from St John of the Cross in the Canción de el Alma: En una noche escura to the exquisite From the Wingbone of a Swan, co-written by the composer and Timothy O’Brien, to the Kabir text of the title piece, which has been versioned for this piece by poet Robert Bly. In each case, The Crossing deliver the texts with a rapt clarity and, in the case of the O’Brien text, a highly musical use of language. A rich and delicate mix of material.
