The Choirs of St Catharine’s College comprise a mixed choir of undergraduates and graduates, and a girls’ choir aged 8-15 drawn from local schools. These young voices bring a lovely freshness to the quality of the singing. The disc showcases the sacred works of three women composers. For me, the most interesting pieces on the disc are Judith Bingham’s reworkings of three familiar works by Tallis, S.S. Wesley and Parry: her original and inventive mind not only opens up new perspectives, but by introducing extra elements to the text she conjures up an entirely new piece alongside the familiar one – two for the price of one! There is also a rejoicing Magnificat from Sally Beamish in her adroit St Catharine’s Service. The choirs sing well and have a pleasing sound, although a little more resonance might add more depth to the bass line.
