Hot on the heels of fine recordings of Mozart and Duruflé, this team turns its attention to the original 1724 version of Bach’s passion. Gilchrist’s Evangelist is poised and clear, Davies’ Christ often unbearably moving. Of the other voices, Sophie Bevan and Roderick Williams stand out, which choral and orchestral contributions are apt and beautifully executed; Cleobury’s direction and dramatic timing are exemplary. Warm, clear surround sound: if these are indeed live recordings, the audience was admirably quiet.
