As a codicil to his LSO concerts pairing symphonies by Szymanowski and Brahms, Gergiev presented choral masterpieces by the two composers. His approach to Deutsches Requiem is fleet, no-nonsense and curiously unmoving in a work where others have been reverential or searching. He secures fine playing and exceptional singing from his Barbiconians, and soloists (especially Maltman, apparently a late replacement) are excellent. But in a crowded field, there are versions which are to be preferred.
