If told I could own only one complete Bach sacred cantata cycle, it would be Suzuki’s. He flows where others drive; he persuades where others insist; he shines where others blaze – it’s never all about him. This blu-ray disc presents the programme of the final disc in the 18-year project as a concert (sans audience) in the Chapel in Kobe where all were recorded. Visually stark, with black-clad performers in an egg-like apse of porcelain purity, Suzuki’s elegant, faith-imbued interpretations of Cantatas BWV 191, 69, 30 and the Agnus Dei of the Mass in B minor, acquire an uplifting yet valedictory quality that suffuses the soul.
