A reissue of a 2009 recording, this CD continues the ongoing series of CDs on Resonus from Saint Thomas’s and the late John Scott. This disc pays tribute to Scott’s adopted land, celebrating the very finest of American choral music from the last seven decades. A tidy reading of Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms in its watered down version for organ, harp and percussion leads to more successful renditions of Randall Thompson’s Alleluia and Aaron Copland’s In the Beginning. Nico Muhly’s Bright Mass with Canons was written for Saint Thomas’s in 2005. It shows Muhly’s admiration for the Tudor composers and 20th-century figures such as Britten, while remaining personal and direct. A fine reading of Samuel Barber’s celebrated Agnus Dei is matched by other shorter pieces by Ned Rorem and a commission from former chorister Daniel Castellanos. Scott’s mastery of his vocal forces is exemplary and the choir’s distinctive sound has been well captured in the excellent remastering of the original recording.
