This generous selection of broadcast recordings, many of them released for the first time, is a treasure trove of song. The naturalness, clarity and poise of Ferrier’s lieder and song is evident in every bar: a delightful Musensohn, Wasserflut (from Winterreise), even the first section of Urlicht. Rubbra’s Three Psalms, dedicated to Ferrier, are wonderful; testament too to the empathy and polish of pianist Frederick Stone, who performs in the majority of the programme. Sound is necessarily primitive but has been as lovingly restored as possible.
