Behind the immense technical challenges presented by these sonatas, there is a bigger challenge: how to capture the spirit of six of the greatest violinists of the age, encapsulated by Ysaÿe with true insight and sincerity, without lapsing into parody and while maintaining one’s own artistic integrity. That Guzzo achieves this with such verve and responsiveness while maintaining the listener’s rapt attention for over an hour is a remarkable achievement. Among recent recordings of the six sonatas, only Alina Ibragimova (Hyperion) is a challenge to the current release, and she is not quite so superbly recorded.
