As Paul Hillier explains in his introduction to this CD, these recordings have been made at different times, in different venues and by different configurations of singers, and while the composers may come from different backgrounds, all are linked to Hillier through friendship. Perhaps the conductor regards this CD as a labour of love: judging from the results, it certainly sounds like it. Ars Nova Copenhagen is Denmark’s crack vocal group of 12 singers for whom this varied programme of contemporary choral music holds no fears. They rise to every challenge sent their way – and the results are breathtaking in their virtuosity and musicality. Particularly enjoyable (and impressive) is the group’s rendition of Hillier’s arrangement (wordless) of Reich’s celebrated Clapping Music. A special shout out should be made for organist Christopher Bowers-Broadbent’s superb playing of Kevin Volans’s Walking Song. Unfortunately, the track listing in the liner notes and sleeve has gone awry.
