Dvorák’s lyrical Mass in D minor is given a skilful performance by Orfeón Pamplonés, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra and four excellent soloists. Antoni Wit’s reading of the work is powerful and at times mesmerising, but a few quieter passages would not have come amiss. Given in its full orchestral version, it lacks nothing in its intensity. Set for soprano and bass soloists, chorus and full orchestra, the cleverly conceived and contrasted Te Deum is given a thoughtful and expressive interpretation. A song of praise certainly, but made all the more poignant by the quieter interjections.
