This is the premiere recording of a new, critical edition of Mozart’s C minor Mass, completed and edited by Frieder Bernius and Uwe Wolf, which itself was the result not only of musicological research but also several try-outs in performance. The edition as sampled on this excellent recording seems eminently stylish and practical, with nothing in the instrumental writing that is out of place; nor does it attempt to supply music for any of the obviously missing sections of the Mass. A bonus track of the Credo as Mozart left it offers us an insight into how much filling in of instrumental detail is required. Bernius’s tempi throughout are generally on the brisk side, which definitely suits the transparent textures of the period instruments. The choral singing is similarly delivered with great clarity, though occasionally a little too soft focused. The Hosanna fugue shows off the group’s dexterity to fine effect. Soloists are accomplished if not of the front rank. Presentation is of Carus’s highest standard.
