Performed from the Süssmayr edition, this CD comes from the Saint John Cantius Church in Chicago, whose laudable aim is the ‘Restoration of the Sacred’ through music. The Saint Cecilia Choir and Orchestra are two of the many music groups attached to the church. The singing from both choir and soloists is good and enthusiastic, as is the orchestral playing. The interpretation of this work should touch one deeply, but this performance doesn’t: there is mainly one level of expression throughout, and although the choir hold a line well, the phrases are not sung expressively and the performance is basically one-dimensional.
