Just 22 years old when these recordings were made, Ringstad’s CD debut makes a very powerful impression indeed. His tone is both warm and clear, with a fine sense for rhythm and line; indeed the Walton is the finest new version since Lawrence Power (Hyperion) and that was ten years ago. Ringstad is matched by superb playing from his compatriots under Weilerstein’s dynamic, flexible conducting, while sound is demonstration quality. It is a pity that the coupling is so slight, bringing the total duration to less than 42 minutes – but do investigate this disc for a very special reading of the Walton.
