The stunningly presented hardback book presentation for this double CD makes clear that the star of the show is the Cavaillé-Coll of St Ouen. There is a wealth of information and illustrations to accompany this presentation of largely French transcriptions. I don’t think I have ever heard the instrument captured so dynamically or handled so adeptly – Aramendi gets to the heart of all of these pieces with effortless style and considerable flair. The whole project succeeds in its endeavour to illustrate that the successful transcription is no slavish copy but the creation of genuine organ repertoire. Louis Robilliard provides masterful arrangements of works including Rachmaninov’s L’île des morts and Fauré’s suite Pelléas et Mélisande.
