The culmination of an extensive Bach Cantata performance series marking the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s Ninety-Five Theses, this celebratory programme links cantatas Ein feste Burg and Gott der Herr ist Sonn und Schild with three wonderful works based on Lutheran chorales by Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vaughan Williams. Choir and band – Clare Baroque – play and sing as though their lives depend on it, and there’s an excellent line-up of soloists. With each work preceded by the original chorale, here’s a gung-ho muscularity of fresh, reforming, confident faith, enhanced by bright, immediate recorded sound.
