Misleading title notwithstanding, this Vespers featuring works by Monteverdi and his contemporaries (Donati, Castello, Frescobaldi, G. Gabrieli et al) has as much historical probity and probability as the celebrated 1610 sequence. Solo ensemble-singing of the highest quality and emotional intensity is matched by glorious virtuoso playing from the English Cornett & Sackbut Ensemble. Elegance and eloquence abound in vivid interpretations, recorded beautifully in acoustics of burnished patina: a must-buy for lovers of Monteverdi and a joyously splendid way for I Fagiolini to celebrate 30 years of originality and excellence.
