There’s less rewarding mental time-travel in Codex Speciálník, even though the manuscript is justly celebrated and the Mariana Consort – an instrumental and vocal ensemble in varied combinations – wants us not to miss the lesser-known bits. Many tracks are world premiere recordings in this warmly earnest (if occasionally creaky in chilly acoustics) survey of polyphony in Prague c.1500.
