Director Kaspars Putninš describes this anthology as ‘a love letter to Latvia, a return to a collective musical heritage’, and indeed it is. This highly talented group of singers put their heart and soul into portraying the choral music of four Latvian composers who cover a period of colourful choral writing during the first decades of the 20th century. Skani (meaning ‘resound’) is a new label set up in anticipation of the centenary of Latvian independence in 2018, with more releases coming to showcase the nation’s rich, musical heritage. The development of this music is inspired by a rich folk tradition. The observation of nature down to the smallest detail and the emotions of the human spirit is the inspiration for both writers and composers. The word painting is quite outstanding, the Latvian Radio Choir under director Putninš totally immersed in their tribute.
