This fine CD celebrates the centenary of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Fatima. Hence the choice of programme, complete with alternatim plainchant which makes sense of the organ versets. All the composers were pupils of Sweelinck, echo effects being exploited particularly in Scheidemann’s Magnificat. The Lutheran adaptation of the Magnificat is heard in Strungk’s Meine Seele erhebet den Herren, but a quite different style, that of Froberger, is heard in Weckmann’s Toccata in A minor. The 34-stop, three-manual organ is built thoroughly in the style of Arp Schnitger, with fifth-comma meantone temperament derived from the Schnitger at Norden. It sounds wonderful.
