Voce Chamber Choir’s new CD under their conductor Suzi Digby pairs the music of the late John Tavener and Roxanna Panufnik. Many of the pieces are here recorded for the first time. Probably of chief interest is Panufnik’s setting to Tavener’s text of 99 Words to My Darling Children, a beautiful piece made for these performers; but the sequence of pieces on the CD offers something of a spiritual journey beyond the individual works. Cellist Matthew Barley’s contributions are beautifully played, not least Tavener’s moving Threnos; and Voce Chamber Choir offer a well-balanced sound with a polished sheen to their singing. An unusual and most welcome CD.
