It’s baroque all the way this time – a menu ranging from gourmet creations to penitential palate cleansers, featuring flavours from Spain, France, the Low Countries and Germany. Travelling from south to north, I’ll begin in the Iberian Peninsula with a wonderful disc marking the third centenary of the death of Sebastián Durón. Who? you ask, as did I: his hitherto underrated music is revealed with eye-opening resplendence by La Grande Chappelle in Música para dos dinastías. Durón’s highly expressive works capture a gamut of moods in passages of sublime quality, whether in grand ceremonial or exquisite chamber music, and this world premiere recording has great presence in bright acoustics.
