The next generation of composers includes Joseph-Hector Fiocco of Brussels, whose Petits motets vol.2 continues Scherzi Musicali’s dedicated exploration of his delightful, little-heard, irrepressibly Italianate sacred music in a well-filled disc. Four virtuoso voices, matched by sprightly playing from the excellent ten-piece band, shine in a recording of exemplary clarity and balance. That disc asks if Fiocco might justly be called ‘the Handel of Brussels’, but here’s the real thing: My Soul Sees and Hears!, the debut album from Houston Baroque, interweaves Handel and Buxtehude in an original and well-constructed programme focusing on their Lutheranism, their links with Hamburg, and emphasising the organ. It’s modestly entertaining in pleasantly lively acoustics, but there are occasional quality and balance issues, especially with forward-placed solo voices.
