This CD comprises settings of liturgical texts from across the centuries. That Philip Stopford can write a good tune there is no doubt, but when you have a large selection of works together they begin to sound the same. The music is easy to pick up as it’s very repetitive, but this programme lacks variety. The composer has been extremely clever by orchestrating many of the pieces, and he’s made an excellent job of it. His rhythmic setting of A boy is born strikes the right chord and his lilting arrangement of We three kings would encourage me to go waltzing down the aisle! Truro Cathedral has an excellently trained choir which is sympathetically accompanied by the admirable BBC National Orchestra of Wales. From a purely musical standpoint, there are more interesting contemporary settings of these texts around.
