Taking his leave from Durham Cathedral after more than three decades as its resident organist, James Lancelot departs in fine style with this intelligently assembled, beautifully executed Bach recital. The romantic leanings of the Father Willis can’t help but imbue the music with a rich textural gloss, but it is delicately managed, never overstated by Lancelot. The sober simplicity of the chorale Erbarm dich mein, O Herre Gott is exquisitely achieved, the Partita Sei gegrüsset, Jesu gütig noble and sublimely still, the concentrated BWV 564 Adagio altogether ravishing. Excellent sound frames instrument and performances to involving effect, with Ian Alexander’s highly informative notes making this more than a mere souvenir of an outstanding partnership.
