The Norwegian Girls’ Choir has been an important fixture on the country’s music scene since the second world war, and very often associated with the preservation of vernacular material. Some of the songs included here are new to the repertoire, in the sense of recently arranged, while some have been in the choir’s book for some time. Appropriately, the programme begins with an item, Velkomme med æra (‘Welcome With Honour’), collected by the great Geirr Tveitt in Hardanger and best known from one of his folksong suites. Stripped of all but its basic melody it makes a perfect introduction to these voices, which are bright, accurate and springlike, like blades of new musical growth. It’s a perfectly pitched programme of material and short enough not to be cloying.
