In 1994 the search for new/old vocal sonorities was clearly still a thing in Germany. Remember Michael Morrow’s Musica Reservata in the 1970s? Well, Weser-Renaissance seem at times to channel those strangulated tones in Thomas Stolzer: Missa Duplex per totum annum, just reissued. Brass and voices combine in interesting polyphony undermined by frigid acoustics and some vocal tuning issues. Although the voices are also not from the top drawer in Thomissøn’s Easter, it’s a fascinating liturgical reconstruction of a Lutheran service in Ribe Cathedral, with Clemens non Papa’s Missa Virtute magna and service music collected by Hans Thomissøn in the mid-16th century. This Danish delight from Bo Holten and the gently toned Musica Ficta exudes a true sense of place and occasion.
