This final CD of Karg-Elert’s works includes arrangements of Handel, J.S. Bach, Schumann, Mendelssohn and Kjerulf, his arrangements for organ of previously composed works, and four original organ works: Canzone op.46b, Angelus op.27 5B, Rondo alla Campanella op.156, and the four-movement Kaleidoscope op.144. The enormous 125-rank Steinmeyer organ was restored to its 1930s state in 2014 and is a fine instrument for the luxuriant harmonies of this colourful music. Engels explores the registrations with great subtlety and finesse. Handel’s Harmonious Blacksmith variations is more a recomposition than an arrangement, excellently performed in a whole-hearted romantic manner.
