It is wonderful to have this coupling in a modern recording: the works for soloist and orchestra by Khachaturian deserve greater dissemination.

The piano concerto is given a fine performance; unfortunately, the piano sound is a little harsh, especially in the cadenza. It’s a pity, as this contains some stunning playing from Simonian. The central Andante con anima is mysterious and fragile. There is a folkish slant to much of the melodic material. Raisin’s accompaniment is spot-on, Simonian’s performance superb. There is a lot of competition but Simonian holds his own.

So too in the spikily playful Concerto- Rhapsody, a rough diamond. Petrov recorded it with the composer conducting, but it needs a first-class recent recording, which is exactly what it gets here. Fabulous.
