One of China’s finest virtuoso organists, Yuan Shen here demonstrates the recent (2012) installation by Casavant Frères into the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The eclectic programme features Bach’s G minor Fantasie & Fugue, Mendelssohn’s Allegro, Chorale & Fugue in D, Franck’s Chorale no.3, the Trois danses of Alain, and concludes with two Poèmes by Thierry Escaich. Shen’s playing is impressive, intelligent and engaging and the instrument accommodates this variety of repertoire admirably. Despite the concert hall acoustics, the engineers have captured the sound with plenty of warmth and resonance.
