Originally released over 20 years ago, this recording of seven of Rubbra’s sacred choral works includes the Anglican ‘Mag & Nunc’ in A flat and the Missa in honorem Sancti Dominici, written to celebrate the composer’s conversion to Roman Catholicism. Now newly released, the CD liner notes do not make clear who is directing the very accomplished Gloriae dei Cantores (Singers to the Glory of God), which is a pity as the approach to Rubbra’s music is evidently sympathetic and committed. The recording finds an excellent balance between the mixed voices and organ (the instrument is that in the Mechanics Hall, Worcester, Massachusetts). Very occasionally, the choir’s tone quality and intonation slips, but not so frequently as to destroy one’s pleasure in Rubbra’s sensuous lines and harmonic writing.
