In this collection of sacred choral works, Julian Anderson is inspired by ways of expressing light. The individuality of his writing can be heard particularly in his Bell Mass. This Missa brevis defies conventional conception to striking effect. The impressive dissonances of the Sanctus are followed in the last two movements by an exploration into the otherworld. It is given a stunning performance by Geoffrey Webber’s young, vibrant and highly talented singers, whose expressive intensity within a phrase is outstanding. Also on the disc are beautiful settings of I saw Eternity, My beloved spake and a Nunc dimittis, among others. Anderson’s music together with the Choir of Gonville & Caius College makes this a stand-out disc.
