The Schola Cantorum Basiliensis has trained innumerable outstanding early music specialists. Its alumni in Musica Fiorita and the Basler Madrigalisten collaborated for the Grands Motets of Giacomo Antonio Perti, elegant works composed in the early 18th century for Ferdinando de’ Medici. An almost frenetic vivacity and historically informed virtuosity notwithstanding, the shallow recording in icy acoustics does justice neither to Perti nor the hard-working artists. There’s cream at the top but it is by pure coincidence that chronology and poor engineering left these thinly flavoured lees at the bottom …
