Haitink studio-recorded all nine of Vaughan Williams’ symphonies for EMI, finding warmth and spaciousness without sacrificing energy when needed. As the performances under review were given at the time of their respective studio recordings, they are essentially similar – although in significantly murkier sound and, in the case of the fifth, marred by a restless, bronchial December audience.
