This rather short CD under the title ‘God is our refuge’ presents a selection of German sacred motets from the 16th to the 21st centuries. The contemporary items by Thomas Buchholz (b.1961) and Wolfram Buchenberg (b.1962) are fine examples of contemporary German sacred music, and the choir clearly can turn its hand to familiar motets by figures such as Walter and Scheidt. Recorded in the cavernous acoustics of Halle’s Moritzkirche, the choir sing with a lot of attack and rhythmic energy; however, their pitching is often below the note to an unacceptable degree on a recording.
