As James Weeks points out in his liner notes, the voice has occupied a central place in Michael Finnissy’s output. The four works on this significant recording – Gesualdo: Libro Sesto (a response to/reworking of material from Gesualdo’s madrigal book), Cipriano, Tom Fool’s Wooing and Kelir – span a 40-year period. The virtuosic intensity of Finnissy’s writing is on display throughout, and each work demands utter conviction from its performers as well as rock-solid technique. Weeks’s EXAUDI have complete command of both, and deliver utterly compelling readings of this music. Warmly recommended.
