The Billy Joel song was chosen for a cover credit to catch the attention, though there are 15 other composers represented, plus some traditional airs, including Loch Lomond. An even more startling juxtaposition might have been Gustav Holst and Gordon Lightfoot, the latter a songwriter much admired by Bob Dylan. Though beautifully sung and making a certain sense of the ‘folk and lore’ tag-line, it’s all a bit clotted as a programme and is probably best heard in sections. That said, and first time round at least, you’ll probably hold out for Joel’s And So It Goes (the last track on the composer’s 1989 Storm Front album). It’s worth waiting for.
