A dedicated educator, Sir George Dyson was popular in his day, but listening to his cleverly constructed part-songs is rather like travelling back in a time machine. Holst’s creative music stands the test of time better: his Welsh Folk Songs are masterly for their uncluttered arrangements that maintain the essential simplicity of folk music, and his Five Part-songs are contrasted pieces that the singers respond well to. The Godwine Choir is a capable group of singers whose performances are lively, but somewhat lacking in depth. The disc features premiere recordings of Dyson’s The Seekers, ‘Reveille’ from Three Songs of Courage; Holst’s Love is Enough; and Dyson’s Nocturne, The Moon and I Loved a Lass.
