The young Canadian maestro Yannick Nezet-Seguin presents a febrile, detailed view of this great song symphony – his howling, moonlit ape for example is terrifying – coaxing glorious playing from the LPO, which in turn is expertly captured by the microphones. As enthusiastically Helden as Toby Spence’s tenor is, it is Sarah Connolly though who impresses most, precisely characterising every mood with great purity and beauty of tone. She here confirms her position as one of today’s great Mahlerians – and as such makes this a very special disc indeed.
