Does the world need another La Traviata? Maybe not, but this new film enshrines the 2019 Royal Opera House performance of Ermonela Jaho, whose Violetta is a creation of the highest artistry imaginable. She is heartbreaking and possesses a delicious luminosity of tone. Charles Castronvo is a suitably ardent Alfredo; Plácido Domingo a woofy Germont. Antonello Manacorda’s conducting is slow but builds the tension. The production, filmed before, is handsome and traditional.
