Fascinating to hear Paul Barnes’ reduction of Glass’s Second Piano Concerto, which outlines the journey of Merriweather Lewis and William Clark (the original scoring included Native American flute). Barnes gave its premiere in Nebraska (2004). Hearing the piece on solo piano seems to underline its monumentality and grandeur.

There are two versions of the famous Wichita Vortex Sutra here, one with narration, one without, offering some fascinating comparisons. Perhaps most illuminating of all is Three Pieces from Appomattox, inspired by the American Civil War, music of astonishing power conveying the horror and numbness of conflict. There is also the rarity, A Secret Solo 2.

This series continues to illuminate. Recommended.
